Suppression

A
  • Allows an individual to divert uncomfortable feelings into socially acceptable feelings in order to avoid thinking about a disturbing issue
  • Example: Focusing on plans to go clothes shopping (desirable, socially acceptable feelings), to avoid thinking about a scheduled bilateral LE amputation (uncomfortable, disturbing issue/feelings).

A
  • Returning to an earlier stage of development to avoid tension or conflict
  • Example: An individual becomes needy or child-like during a period of stresss

A
  • The redirection of an emotion or reaction from one object to a similar but less threatening one
  • Example: A child who is angry with their parents yells at a younger sibling (“Chain of Screaming”)
