States of Mater Flashcards

1
Q

What is a solid?

A

A solid is a state of matter that has a fixed shape, size and volume, and cannot be easily compressed. Solids’ particles are packed tightly together and have relatively low energy levels, which prevents them from freely moving around.

Q

What is a liquid?

A

A liquid is a state of matter that has a fixed volume but no fixed shape, so they take the shape of the container they are in. Their particles are less tightly packed together compared to solids, but more so than gasses. UNlike solids, the particles can move around which allows the liquid to flow.

Q

What is a gas?

A

A gas is a state of matter that has a definite mas, but no definite shape or volume. Like liquids, gasses take the shape of their container, but gasses will expand to completely fill the container they are in. Gasses particles are spread further apart than liquids or solids, so they can move freely.

Q

What is a physical change?

A

Physical changes are where the shape, size, or state of the matter changes, but the substance is still essentially the same. For example, chopping up a carrot or ice melting into water are both physical changes.
