Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
Define A closed system
is one in which mass is conserved inside the system but energy can enter or leave the system freely.
Define An open system
is one in which both energy and matter can be exchanged between the system and its surroundings.
Define A reversible reaction
is one in which products can be converted back into reactants.
Define Dynamic chemical equilibrium
a reversible reaction in which the forward and reverse reactions take place simultaneously and at the same rate, hence the concentrations of reactants and products are constant.
Define Equilibrium constant (Kc)
An expression of the concentration of the products over the concentration of the reactants for a reaction that is in equilibrium.
Define Le Chatelier’s principle
When an external stress (change in pressure, temperature or concentration) is applied to a system in chemical equilibrium, the equilibrium point will change in such a way as to counteract the stress.
Define Yield
A measure of the extent of a reaction, generally measured by comparing the amount of product formed against the amount of product that is possible.
