Statistical Testing- Probability, Chance and Significance Flashcards

1
Q

What are inferential statistics?

A

A type of statistical analysis that allow researchers to determine whether they have found a significant result or if it occurred by chance.

Q

What is the first step we do to work out whether our test is statistically significant or not?

A

We are given the calculated value and table of critical value.
Read the no. participants (sign test take the no. participants who got score0 away)

Q

What is the third step we do to work out whether our test is statistically significant or not?

A

Significance level (always p=0.05 unless stated otherwise). Reading the table gives the critical value.

Q

What is the fourth step we do to work out whether our test is statistically significant or not?

A

Compare critical value to calculated value. Test will state which one needs to be higher to be significant or not.

Q

How is the layout for a Mann-Whitney table?

A

Both sides of the table is the number of participants in group 1 or 2.

Q

What is the format for writing a conclusion for a statistical test?

A

The calculated value of X is GREATER/LESS than the critical value of Y. This means the results ARE/ARE NOT SIGNIFICANT. Therefore, we can ACCEPT,REJECT THE NULL HYPOTHESIS.
