Why does social support support nurse resilience

A

Effective social support results in individuals feeling valued, cared for, and provides a sense of belonging.

Nurses can draw on social support from colleagues,
managers, friends, and families. Individuals need to
engage with social supports, and workplaces can
provide support systems and foster positive collegial
relationships.

Why does Self-efficacy support nurse resilience

A

An individual’s belief in their ability to succeed in a given situation or activity.

An individual’s perception of self-efficacy will influence the activities they engage in and those with higher levels of self-efficacy are more likely to persevere and succeed.

Why does Work–life balance/selfcare support nurse resilience

A

Work–life balance
* The division of an individual’s time between work and family or leisure activities. Does not mean time is equally divided between work and nonwork activities but can vary over time and is the perception that work and nonwork activities are compatible.

Self-care
* Actively protecting your well-being and happiness. Can include a wide range of activities including exercise, good nutrition, mindfulness, meditation, and socialising

Why does humour support nurse resilience

A

he ability to make light of adversity through humour has long been recognized as a way in which nurses and other health professionals cope with workplace stress (Wanzer et al., 2005).

Humour can foster relationships with colleagues and patients enabling teamwork, relieving tension and improving overall experiences (Dean & Major, 2008).

Why does Optimism support nurse resilience

A
  • Optimism is the extent to which individuals hold favourable expectations for the future and is linked to increased levels of coping and better physical health, whereas pessimism is the expectation that bad things will happen (Carver et al., 2010).
  • Hope is related to optimism but differs as it is a feeling of expectation or desire for a particular thing to happen rather than a general favourable outlook.

Why does Being realistic support nurse resilience

A
  • Nurses also need to be realistic as clearly not all situations they encounter have positive outcomes. Being realistic can be described as having a practical and sensible idea of what can be achieved or expected.
  • This includes reframing experiences, having realistic expectations about caregiving, cultivating a realistic perspective on life and realistic goal setting.

What is WRAP

A

The Wellness Recovery Action Plan® or WRAP®, is a mental health promotion and prevention process that anyone can use to make their life the way they want it to be.

It was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland who was affected with mental health difficulties and who was struggling to incorporate wellness tools and strategies into her life.

What are the Key elements of WRAP (7)

A

Wellness toolbox – what things can I do that help me to manage stress or difficult feelings or situations?

Daily plan – when life is ok, what I do everyday?

Stressors – if these things happen, I can find it stressful or distressing

Early warning signs – what do I notice when I’m starting to struggle or life is feeling more difficult?

When Things are Breaking Down – what do I notice when I’m really struggling or distressed?

Crisis Plan – what helps when I am struggling, what can I do, who can help me?

Post-Crisis Plan – as I start feeling better/less distressed, what is going to support me to continue feeling better? What helped the last time I was struggling or distressed?
