Q

What are the similarities of the absorption and emission spectrum?

A

Lines appear at the same place for an element and the thickness of the line in the spectrum tells you the abundance.

Q

What are the differences in the absorption and emission spectrum?

A

Absorption is black lines on a coloured background and is of electrons moving up energy levels.
Emission is coloured lines on a black background and is of electrons moving down energy levels.

Q

What is Bohr’s theory?

A

That the electron in the Hydrogen atom exists only in certain definite energy levels (shells.)
A photon of light is emitted/absorbed when the electron changes levels.
Energy of the photon is the difference between the 2 energy levels.

Q

describe the lyman model

A

rings represent different energy levels and the frequencies of the lines correspond to changes in energy.
each arrow represents an electron dropping from a higher energy level to a lower energy level and the larger the gap between the two levels, the higher the frequency of electromagnetic radiation emitted
