Oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, euthanasia Flashcards

1
Q

Oxygen delivery is depending on ___

A
  • Hb concentration -> anaemia
  • PaO2 -> hypokalemia

Q

In case of hypoxia PaO2 - ? Sa O2 -?

A

PaO2 < 80 Hgmm
SaO2 < 90%

Goal: increase the inspired O2 concentration (FiO2)

Q

Clinical signs of hypoxaemia

A
  • restlessness
  • dyspnoe
  • increased respiratory rate (>32-40/min)
  • labial breathing
  • open mouth breathing (cats)
  • abnormal respiratory sounds (upper airway stridor, crepitation
  • cyanosis
  • gasping

6
Q

“Flow by” oxygen

A
  • small diameter tube held to the nose/nose canula
  • through mask (some animals don’t tolerate)
  • 2-3 litre/min -> FiO2: 25-40%

Q

Oxygen hood/collar

A
  • Elisabeth collar ventral 50-75% covered by plastic folia
  • 1 litter/10kg/min -> FiO2: 40-60%
  • CAVE: some dogs dont tolerate it -> panting -> increased humidity -> hyperthermia

CPR. Important consideration

A
  • underlying disease
  • owners will

Q

ABC of CPR

A

Basic life support:

Airways
Clean airways, endotracheal intubation

Breathing
AMBU-ballon + oxygen, 10/min, inspiration 1 sec, expiration 5 sec

Circulation

Advanced life support: Drugs, ECG, Fluids

Q

CPR ABC: circulation. Chest compressions

A
17
Q

CPR. Drugs

A
  • IV or intratracheal (double dose + drug diluted in water or saline)
  • drugs that could be antagonised -> ANTOGONIZE (fentanyl-naloxone, medetomidine - atipamezole)
  • epinephrine - due to strong vasoconstrictive effect of peripheral vessels
  • atropine -> HR increase, vascular resistance increase, BP increase
18
Q

E. ECG. Shockable rhythms - cardio version

A
19
Q

F. Fluids

A

Q

Post-resuscitation care

A
21
Q

Euthanasia

A

Only in indicated cases - the vet can deny to perform euthanasia:
- incurable disease or injury
- control of infectious disease
- unavertable attack
- scientific research
- high treatment costs

22
Q

Performing euthanasia

A
  1. IV catheter
  2. General anaesthesia (Acepromazine/ketamine+diazepam/propofol) IV
  3. Drugs for euthanasia: pentobarbital, T-61 injections (general anaesthesia in advance!!!)
