Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS)

A

Apathy most common
- “laziness”
- from front part of brain that is shrinking

Anxiety
- unique
- severe worry for no reason
- no response to treatment
- only respond to dementia modifying meds

Agitation
- more irratible

Depression
- doesn’t respond to anti-depressant therapy
- not normal depression
- linked to brain atrophy and dysfunction
- developed late onset of depression (not only dementia, can be physical too)

Mood
- temporal part of brain

Psychosis
- hearing and seeing things
- visual and auditory hallucinations of the past

  • others: sleep, eating disorders, motor behaviour
