Electron Structure Flashcards
What is an atomic orbital
A region within an atom that can hold up to 2 electrons with opposite spins
What are the 4 different types of orbitals
s, p, d and f orbitals
What is the information on s orbitals
each s orbital can hold up to 2 electrons. It has a spherical shape
What is the information on p orbitals
Each p orbital can hold up to 2 electrons. It has a dumbbell shape
From shell 2 upwards each shell contains 3 p orbitals px py and pz
What is the information on d orbitals
Can hold up to 2 electrons each. More complex and exist in groups of 5.
From shell 3 upwards each shell contains 5 d orbitals
What is the information on f orbitals
Can hold up to 2 electrons each
From shell 4 upwards there are 7 f orbitals in each shell
What is a sub shell
A group of the same type of atomic orbitals within a shell
What happens if you compare the energy of the 2s and 2p orbitals
2p has a higher energy level than 2s
What happens if you compare the energy of the 3 orbitals in the 2p subshell
All 3 orbitals in the 2p subshell have equal energy
What is n
The principal quantum number. The larger the value of n the further away the shell is from the nucleus and the higher the energy level
What happens if you need to configure ions
If it has a negative ion then ADD but if it is positive then SUBTRACT
