1.4 - Alfred Wegener And Tectonic Plates Flashcards
(16 cards)
The crust
Solid, thin and rocky
Mantle
Properties of solid, flows slowly, convection currents
Outer core
Liquid nickel and iron
Inner core
Solid nickel and iron
Lithosphere
The crust and part of the mantle below
What’s in the lithosphere ?
Minerals
Wegners theory
The continents were once connected called Pangea, They slowly moved apart, Mountains are formed when the edge of a drifting continent collided with another
Evidence for Wegeners theory
Continents look like they fit together like a jigsaw, there are similar rock patterns and fossils found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean
Continental drift
Tectonic plates moving a few centimetres per year caused by convention currents in the mantle
Direction of destructive plate boundaries
Towards
Direction of constructive plate boundaries
Apart
Direction of conservative plate boundaries
Slide past
Destructive plate boundary
The denser plate gets pushed down, forms magma
Constructive plate boundary
Magma rises and cools to fill gap, new rock formed
Result of a conservative plate boundary
Earthquake
Result of a destructive plate boundary
Volcano or mountains
