chronic muscle pain syndrome (not a disease), can occur as result of other inflammatory conditions, metabolic dysfunctions, or cancer, most common musculoskeletal disorder.

Risk factors for fibromyalgia

A

prolonged anxiety, emotional stress, trauma (e.g., motor vehicle accident, work injury, surgery), rapid steroid withdrawal, hypothyroidism, and viral and non-viral infections, & exposure to tobacco, or no obvious events or illnesses. Increased prevalence among minimally to moderately physically fit, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder

etiology of fibromyalgia

A

 Diet, viral origin, sleep disorder
 Occupational, seasonal, or environmental influences
 Psychologic distress
 Adverse childhood experiences, including sexual abuse
 Familial or hereditary link

Clinical manifestations of fibromyalgia

A

muscle pain often described as aching or burning. Diffuse pain or tender points, sleep disturbances, symptoms are exacerbated by stress, exhaustive physical activity, humidity/heat, cold damp weather, trauma.

Improve processing & handling pain by CNS, relaxation techniques, medications, and hollistic and multidisciplinary, focusing on education and support.

Special implications for the therapist regarding fibromyalgia

A

A positive approach is to suggest working together to learn how to move forward with FMS, respecting limitations but not being controlled by them. Monitoring vital signs (BP & HR indicate cardiac/circulatory system function)
