1
Q

What happens when you bring a positively charged object next to a neutral object

A

The positive charges would move away from the the positive object and the negative charges would move towards the positive object

Overall: attraction towards the positive object

Q

what two factors increase the electric potential energy?

A
  • seperation distance (increase)
  • size of charge (increase)

Q

what happens as work is done on the charge?

A
  1. moves towards the positive object and transfers
  2. transfering it’s electric potential energy to kinetic energy

decrease in electric potential energy= increase in kinetic energy (no F)

Q

what is the difference between potential and electric potential energy

A
  • potential only takes seperation distance into account
  • electri cpotential energy takes seperation distance and the magnitude of charge into account

Q

describe the process of lightning

A
  1. negative charge builds up at the bottom of a storm cloud
  2. the negative charge repells the negative charges in the ground and attracts the postitive charge
  3. cloud attracted to ground creating an elctric potential energy
  4. since the cloud is so far away (seperable distance)
  5. large potential difference between cloud and coulumb
  6. work done on charge moving towards the gorund means that electric potential energy is converted to kinetic energy
  7. some energy is alaso transfered to the air
