This yearโs studies has obviously been quite stressful. As students, our future depends on how well we perform this year, so it can become overwhelming at times. But ultimately, I think that the pressure of studies this year has been beneficial to my self-development, and I know that you canโt grow in a comfortable environment, so I actually appreciate the difficulties of this year.

When I was in my second year of secondary school, I went to Japan with my family and couldnโt speak Japanese at the time. But tried to self-learn a bit, and using a notebook, I tried to communicate with the Japanese people. But obviously it was difficult, and I could only interact with Japanese people using English or just pointing at things. So from that point onwards, it was my goal to learn Japanese properly, and in the first year of high school, I began learning Japanese.

I think itโs just great to be able to communicate in another language, whether through speaking, or through writing. And, it is rewarding to see my hard work pay off as I slowly become better and better.

The most difficult part of Japanese is listening comprehension. Although speaking and writing is of course still difficult, you only use the vocabulary that you know, to express yourself. With listening comprehension however, you could hear any word in the entire language, and so it is likely there are lots of words that you donโt know. Therefore, listening is like a puzzle, where you have to put together everything that you DO understand, to construct a meaning.

I learned French in year 7, and Italian in primary school, but it didnโt interest me much to be honest.
And also, learning Japanese itself takes a lot of time and dedication, let alone learning another language.

My parents take me to the station, and I take the train which takes about 50 minutes, then walk about 5 mins to school. In total it takes about an hour.

I think most interesting subject is Japanese. The reason is that it is actually applicable to my life because I intend to go to Japan often in the future, so naturally Iโm more interested as I know that it will be useful to me. On the other hand, with subjects like maths for instance, I know that I wonโt ever use it in everyday life, so itโs not very interesting to me.

The most difficult subject is maths. This year I am learning two types of maths. One is general maths, and one is advanced maths. Understanding the concepts in advanced maths is extremely difficult. The average grade in my school is around 60%.
Japanese is pretty difficult, but because I enjoy it, it doesnโt FEEL that difficult.

English is my best subject. The reason is that Iโve been in high school debating team since year 8, so those skills definitely transferred to English. Not just the speaking component, but mainly the ability to organise words and thoughts in a structured manner.

Studying Japanese has been very enjoyable this year. Obviously, this language is very difficult to learn so itโs inevitably quite stressful. However, I do think that it is worth it, because unlike many other subjects, Japanese is a skill that I can apply in my life even after high school. So Iโm having fun now, and Iโll definitely have fun using the Japanese that I have learnt when I go there with my family next year.

I was in the school debating team since year 8. At that time there were posters all around the school advertising the debating team, and so myself and some friends decided to give it a try, and I ended up loving it, and have been debating ever since.
The debate topics are typically based on the economy, ethics issues, education, the environment. It can be anything to be honest, as long as there are arguments that support and arguments that object.

The happiest moment of the year was definitely year 12 formal. That was one of the only times this year when I could genuinely take my mind off studying, and just enjoy the moment. All my friends were with me, and everyone was having fun. Just thinking about it makes me happy.
