• Use it to help you get started with ideas. Ask it for resources, topics, or as questions about a topic that you are interested in.
• Use it when brainstorming, and argue with it. You can use the AI as a sounding board with no judgement whatsoever!
• Ask it to explain things you don’t understand, or summarize complex ideas in simple terms. This can help you process big ideas in ways other course resources might not.
• Use it for proofreading and editing – BUT you can’t trust it not to change your ideas. You have to carefully check, tweak, and make sure the work is still fundamentally yours.
• CITE your AI use in any assessments you submit, and be transparent about how it was used.

• Don’t enter your assessment questions or ask it to write your essays. That’s plagiarism, whether you cite it, quote it, etc.
• Don’t trust it. AI has many issues. It is often incorrect. It will change your meaning. It will make up sources. It can be biased.
• Don’t rely on it for creativity. AI is essentially a plagiarism machine. Produce your own original works and ideas.
• Don’t use to generate personal responses. We value YOUR opinions, YOUR experience, YOUR ideas and feedback. We want to hear from you – not the machine.
• DON’T violate any course’s policies, or York’s policies, on AI and academic integrity. Refer to your course outlines – and ASK.
