Q

put it all together! what effects can a drought have on a lake?

A

drought –> wildfires

when surrounding vegetation is destroyed, less organic matter flows into the lake, affecting plankton growth patterns etc

Q

what do we learn from Keratella vs Daphnia zooplankton bloom patterns?

A

keratella and daphnia are both filter feeders. however keratella stay in the water column all year round, while daphnia are only around seasonally. both feed on diatoms.

when diatom blooms occur earlier, keratella are able to track the bloom. however daphnia bloom at their usual time, and get the short end of the stick.

this is important bc daphnia are usually the foundation for the relevant food chain since they hold more energy (“shunt”)

Q

how can a decrease in DOC affect phyto- and zooplankton populations in the face of global warming?

A

decrease in DOC means more availability in light, which is usually a good thing. however when we take into account global warming, more UV light is able to penetrate into lakes. without DOC to disperse light, plankton are subject to harmful UV light which fucks up they populations
