What is oceanography?
Oceanography is the science that uses geology, chemistry, physics, and biology to study all aspects of the world ocean.
What are the four major ocean basins?
The four major ocean basins are the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Arctic Ocean.
Which ocean is the largest and deepest?
The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean.
What is bathymetry?
Bathymetry is the measurement of ocean depths and charting of the ocean floor.
What does sonar stand for and what does it do?
Sonar stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging; it uses sound waves to calculate distance to an object.
How does the depth of the ocean affect sound wave return time?
If the ocean is shallow, sound waves return quickly; if it is deep, it takes longer.
What is multibeam sonar?
Multibeam sonar is a new version of sonar that uses more than one sound source.
How do satellites measure the ocean?
Satellites use radar to compute the distance to the ocean’s surface.
What are submersibles?
Submersibles are small underwater craft used for deep-sea research to collect data about areas of the ocean unreachable by humans.
