Scientific endeavour Flashcards
Hypothesis
Statement of a prediction; written before a experiment
Independent Variable
changed variable
Dependent variable
Measured variable
Controlled variable
Constant variable
Bunsen Burner
Heat substances
Tripod stand
A support for the substance places one top of the Bunsen burner flame
Test tube (smaller than a boiling tube)
Small amount of substances for heating or mixing
Measuring tube
Measures volumes of liquids; various capacities; precision of 0.5ml
Boiling tube
(Bigger than test tube) simple reactions can be carried out involving heating
Burette
For dispensing substances in PRECISE volumes
Gas jar
Contains gases smallest division up to 0.10 m3 (measures up to hundredths)
Pipette
Measures accurately fixed volumes of liquids; various capacities, to precision
Precautions to be taken when doing measurements
- Eye level should be positioned vertically (90 degrees), when reading measurement
- To avoid parallax error which is the error in reading due to incorrect positioning of eyes
Steps with using a vernier caliper
- Place the object between the jaws firmly
- Read the main scale + the zero mark one the vernier scale
- Read the vernier scale
- Add the main scale and the vernier scale (find diameter)
Measuring volume: measuring cylinder
Precision of 0.5cm3 or 0.5m
