Registers
Michael Halliday, British linguist, introduces 3 variables that determine how to analyze registers:
- Field
- Tenor
- Mode
Variable in analyzing registers pertaining to what type of language is used
The subject matter of the text
Field
Variable in analyzing registers pertaining to how other people in the conversation affect the overall message. It signals difficulty in identifying what message is really conveyed.
The relationship between those involved in the communicative act
The attitude the speaker/writer manifests.
Tenor
Tenor is marked by _____ which could be either equal or unequal.
Power Relations
It resides in the intent of the speaker/writer to evoke a sense of belongingness to the listener/reader.
Equality
Levels in understanding tenor:
- Examine the role (doctor and patient, teacher and student, etc.)
- Look into the expected characteristics whether they are employed or not
- Consider the value system shared by constituents
Range of Register wherein the language used is unchangeable or immortalized.
(Wedding vows, national anthems, Bible verses)
Frozen or Static
Range of Register wherein the language that is used around businesses, formal gatherings, scholarly works, and other formal occasions.
Formal
Range of Register wherein the language used is less formal and is used to show an advisory approach.
Consultative
Range of Register wherein the language is used in simple conversations. There are no formalities and everyone could understand it.
Casual
Range of Register wherein language is used towards family, loved ones, and special partners.
Intimate
Variable in analyzing registers refers to text construction, looking at whether it is based on written or spoken forms of communication.
Mode
_____ are trickier to do since there is no immediate feedback. Sender still needs to know the context, purpose, and audience to properly use the specific phrases and rules towards their intended audience.
