Cellular Standards/Phones Flashcards
What’s the meaning behind the word “cellular” in cellular network?
Geographic areas are separated into different cells
- Antennas provide coverage for cells with certain frequencies
What was one of the first cellular standards?
2G
- Consisted of two global standards: GSM, CDMA
- Had very poor data support
What is the global standard GSM?
Global System for Mobile Communications (2G, obsolete, OG connection)
- 90% of the market
- Used by AT&T and T-Mobile, allows moving SIM (subscriber identity module) cards between phones
- Uses multiplexing allowing users to send and receive different types of data at the same time as others
What is the global standard CDMA?
Code Division Multiple Access (2G)
- Multiple people can send info on the same network
- Each call uses a different code, phone filters out unrelated codes
- Used by Verizon and Sprint, less popular around the world
What is 3G technology and what new benefits did it provide?
3rd Generation
- Introduced in 1998
- Better than 2G, provided several Mb/s
- Provided new functionality such as GPS, video streaming
What obstacle did 4G and LTE resolve for its users? What speeds were supported?
LTE (long term evolution) converged the standards of GDM and CDMA
- Let companies just use one standard (LTE) to send data over a wireless network
LTE supports downloads up of to 150 Mb/s
-LTE-A (advanced) supports up to 300 Mb/s
What is 5G and what did it provide?
5th generation which launched in 2020
- Significant performance increase at higher frequencies
- May eventually go up to 10 Gb/s
How does 5G effect IoT devices?
The bandwidth is increased allowing much bigger amounts of data to be transferred per second
What are PRL updates?
Preferred Roaming List
- Allows phone to connect to the right tower
- Can be updated over the air (OTA)
How does a cellular connection change when used with a hotspot?
The cell signal is converted into a 802.11 wireless connection
- Becomes a personal wireless router
What refers to the 2G/3G mobile telecommunications standards?
GSM
T/F: LTE and its later revision LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) are often marketed as 4G standards.
True
T/F: The term “Mobile hotspot” refers to network access through a mobile device that acts as a portable WAP.
True
A database on a mobile device containing bands, sub-bands and service provider IDs allowing the device to establish connection with the right cell phone tower is called:
PRL
(preferred roaming list)
What type of software enables a centralized administration of mobile devices including policies and procedures?
MDM
