metals and non metals Flashcards
define luster
shiny when polished able to reflect light from its surface
define malleable
able to be beaten or hammered or pressed in to a sheet
define ductile
able to be drawn in to a wire
describe the difference between metals and non metals in terms of conductivity
metals are a good conductor of electricity in solid or liquid state
describe the difference between metals and non metals in terms of ductility
metals = ductile
non metals = not ductile
describe the difference between metals and non metals in terms of
appearance
metals =lustrous
non metals = dull
describe the difference between metals and non metals in terms of melting and boiling points
metal= high M&B points
non metals= low M&B points
describe the difference between metals and non metals in terms of conductors
metals= good conductor
non metals= poor conductor used as insulator
describe the structure of metal atoms
metal atoms are pact together in a lattice structure the valance electrons are able to move freely (metallic bonding )
why do metals conduct electricity
because electrons are free to move
describe what happens when a metal structure is hit with a hammer or being drawn into a wire
the cations can move past on another to form a new shape or drawn in to a wire but don’t break the metallic bonds because the forces holding the lattice together are non directional
a word to describe non metals
brittle
metal + acid =?
metal + acid—> salt + Hydrogen
metal + oxygen =?
metal + oxygen –> metal oxide
metal + water =?
metal + –> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
