Transactional stress model Flashcards

1
Q

Processing efficiency Theory

A

= Distraction theory (distracted by our own anxiety)

Q

Attentional Control theory

A

More complex distraction model. Claims we’re less sufficient in processing information. Stress compromises efficiency of information processing system. More focus on short term reaction

= Distraction theory (Goal-directed vs stimulus driven)

Q

Conscious processing hypothesis

A

Stress causes athlete to attempt consciously controlling previously automated motor skills resulting in disruption. It interferes w disruption

= Explicit monitoring theory (self-focused)

Q

Explicit monitoring study Football

A

Football task w different levels.
Had a couple of tasks with focus on one task, two tasks and skill focus.

The advanced players performed worse in the skill-focused task

The novices performed better in the skill focus

Q

Explicit monitoring study Golf

A

Golf task with different pressure levels in three conditions: control, appraisal ‘it’s just a game’, and distraction ‘take song in mind’

Low pressure; similar
High pressure: Control perforemed worse

Q

Attentional control theory (distraction model) study

A

Successor of Processing efficiency theory;

Dart training on climbing wall
Control: low
Experiment: low + ego-stressor

Post test of different heights on wall. From low to high .

  • The mild and high heights maintained in pressure group
  • The control group declined under high.

Effort was the same, but pressure caused the experimental group to maintain.
