Q

what does telemachus say to nestor?

A

tells Nestor that they are from Ithaca and have come on business to seek any information about his father, odysseus. Telemachus claims that we know about all the other men that took part in the war, and where they went or died, but Zeus has ‘wrapped the death of Odysseus in utter mystery’. Telemachus asks Nestor to tell him anything he knows about what happened to Odysseus, and not to soften the story to protect his feelings, but describe how he saw it.

Q

how does nestor describe what happened to brothers menelaus and agammemnon?

A

Nestor claims that after the Trojan war, Athene created a feud between the brothers menelaus and agamemnon- menelaus wanted to return home after the war, but agamemnon wanted to stay and pay offerings and respect to Athene. The next morning, Menelaus and half the men left and returned home safely, whilst the other half of men stayed with agamemnon.
Nestor claims that he returned safely to plyos and doesn’t know about the fate of odysseus.

A

Nestor then tells the story of Agammemnon and Aegisthus- Aegisthus killed agamemnon, and in return agamemnon’s son, orestes killed aegisthus. Q

what does telemachus say that he wishes?

A

Telemachus tells Nestor that he wishes that the gods would give him enough strength to avenge his father and to get the suitors out of the palace. Nestor claims that he wishes that athene could give telemachus the same loving care that she gave to his father during the campaigns at Troy, and that he has never seen the gods show so much affection to mortals as athene showed to odysseus. Telemachus replies to this that he will never receive help or love from the gods in finding his father and banishing the suitors- but athene in the form of mentes criticises telemachus for speaking so foolishly

Q

how does nestor describe menelaus’ story?

A

Nestor explains that menelaus was still at Troy when aegisthus attempted to seduce agamemnon’s wife clytemnestra. Agammemnon had left a minstrel/bard to watch over her and make sure that she remained faithful to her husband, however, aegisthus took the minstrel/bard to a desert island and left him there to die. He took Clytemnestra back to his home, and took her for himself. After this, he gave many offerings to the gods to show his gratitude for claiming such a bride. Meanwhile, Zeus sent Menelaus to Egypt to gather a great gift, and he didn’t return until the day that orestes killed Aegisthus. Aegisthus was already slain, and Menelaus couldn’t avenge his brother.

17
Q

what does nestor warn telemachus about?

A

Nestor warns telemachus not to leave Odysseus’ palace for too long or to get too far from home, as it isn’t safe for him to leave Odysseus’ fortunes with the suitors in the palace. Instead, he urges him to pay menelaus a visit. He offers his chariots, horses and sons to take him to menelaus if he wishes.

20
Q

he claims that he will never be a coward or weakling when the gods are in his favour.

21
Q

A

they drink to athena

22
Q

what happens the next morning?

A

Nestor holds a feast. When everyone is gathered, a goldsmith covers a heifer’s horns in gold, Nestor pours purifying water and flings barley, and one of his sons chops through the heifer’s neck. The women pray, the men drain the heifer’s blood, quarter it, and cut out and burn the thighbones. They eat the organs and roast the remaining meat. In the meantime, Nestor’s daughter Polycaste bathes Telemachus, rubs him down with oil, and dresses him in beautiful clothes, so that he looks like a god. After everyone feasts, Nestor orders his sons to bring Telemachus a team of horses and a chariot, and his son Pisistratus drives the team towards Sparta.
