Probability Flashcards
What is a null hypothesis ?
It is a statement of no difference or no correlation. An assumption there is no relationship in the population from which a sample is taken with respect to variables being studied.
What is alternative hypothesis ?
A testable statement about the relationship between 2 or more variables.
What do we mean by chance ?
Refers to something with no cause. It just happens.
What is probability ?
A numerical measure of the chance certain events will occur. A statistical test gives the probability that a particular sample did not occur if the null hypothesis for the population was true.
What is a type 1 error ?
When a researcher uses too lenient levels of significance which leads to the researcher rejecting the null hypothesis that is true.
What is a type 2 error ?
When a researcher uses too strict levels of significance which leads to the researcher accepting the null hypothesis which was not true.
Why do researchers tend to use a significance level of 0.05 ?
It is a good compromise between being too strict or too lenient about accepting the null hypothesis. So tries to avoid type 1 and 2 errors ?
