How to respond to a client asking sexual questions about themselves?

A

Respond non-judgmentally
Not expected for you to have answers, but make it clear that issues will be addressed
◦ Use Reflective Listening
◦ Use Normalizing (egs. may acknowledge that others have similar concerns)
◦ Use a Neutral voice.
◦ Comments are very Generalized.

Changes after a SCI

A
  • Usually no genital sensation
  • Often has the ability to have reflex erections
  • Disruption in ability to ejaculate
  • Maintaining an erection may require a device like a constrictor band, medication, or penile implant

Factors that effect:

A
  • Fatigue
  • Limited ROM
  • Spasticity
  • Limited independent mobility
  • Dysreflexia
  • Bowel and bladder management
    All of these factors often mean more planning, less spontaneity.
