Oral - Ch 2 Flashcards
Difference between standard and special airworthiness certificate
Standard - normal, utility, acrobatic, transport, commuter
Special - Light sport, experimental, restricted
What is an experimental airworthiness certificate?
Does not have a type certification or does not conform to its type cert, yet is in condition for safe operations.
For an aircraft to be considered airworthy, which two conditions must be met?
- Conform to its type design - proper components are installed, supplemental type certificates included
- Safe Operation to fly - ie. in relation to repair and deterioration
How to determine an airplane conforms to its type cert?
- Preventive maintenance, maintenance and alterations undertaken in line with the CFR
- Registered in the US
- Ensuring maintenance log is comprehensive - inspections, maintenance etc.
How to determine an aircraft is in safe operation?
- Thorough and systematic pre-flight inspection, including maintenance logs
- If inoperative equipment, use the guidance in 14 CFR 91.213
What is an airworthiness directive? Two types?
Medium used by FAA
Inform owners or operators or others interested of unsafe conditions
Mandatory compliance
Stipulates conditions aircraft can still be flown
Emergency - immediate compliance prior to further flight
Less urgent - requiring compliance in a specified time period
What is an alternative method of compliance? AMOC
Provides an acceptable method of complying with an AD from what the AD specifies. Ex. Permits an aircraft to be flown after the required time/date of an AD. Or owner has better way to fix it.
Ex. Could apply to the FAA for a special flight permit to fly to another airport for the work to be undertaken.
What is a type certificate data sheet?
Issued when a new engine, aircraft, prop etc. Meets FAA requirements
Notes the limitations, conditions, specifications, airworthiness requirements were met. Ie. airspeed limits, weight limits etc.
What is a supplemental type certificate?
FAA approval of a major change of type design to a previously certified product. Issued when an alteration is not permitted by original TCDS. STC becomes a permanent part, must be kept with logs.
Where is information on the required placards found?
- TCDS or aircraft specification
- AD or limitations section of AFM
Required Tests and Inspections on an Aircraft
A - Airworthiness directives and life-limited parts
V - VOR equipment check every 30 days (IFR)
1 - 100 hr inspection for planes hired or instruction
A - altimeter, altitude reporting equipment and static test (IFR)
A - annual inspection
T - Transponder tests and inspections 24 mts
E - ELT - transmitter, battery etc. 24 months
What is an annual inspection?
Conducted by an A&P (airframe and power plant) with an IA (inspection authorization)
Complete inspection of aircraft and engine as required by regulations
Difference between annual inspection and 100 hr?
AI - A&P with IA
100 - A&P
Can you fly to an annual inspection if it is overdue?
Yes if receive a special flight permit from FAA, which requires all due ADs are complied with. Would also need a SFP if flying in non-compliance with an AD.
When is a special flight permit necessary?
When an aircraft is in safe condition to operate, but does not meet airworthiness requirements.
- To meet maintenance, inspection requirements
- Delivering or exporting and aircraft
- Production flight testing something new
- Evacuating aircraft from danger
- Customer demonstration flightsh
