Q

Steps in Pyruvate oxidation
(describe the 3 steps)

A
  1. one co2 is removed from EACH pyruvate and released as waste product of decarboxylation
  2. remaining 2 carbon protions are oxidized by NAD+ (gains 2H+ and 2e- from pyruvate, and the remaining 2 carbon compounds become an acetic acid)
  3. coenzyme A attaches to acid group and forms acetyl CoA which can eneter the Krebs cycle

Q

GTP-ATP
some rxns are just ____ (example) whereas the decarboxylations are all coupled with ______ (example)

A

oxidations (maltate to oxaloacetate and succinate to fumarate)
-oxidations (NADH is made whenever CO2 is)

Q

Krebs cycle
-what is it
-carbons removed leave the body as what
-the intermediates are ____. H’s (e-‘s) removed from what molecules (H are transported where in what form)

A

-a series of chemical reactions to break the 6 carbon cirtric acid molecule back into the 4 carbon ooxaloactate (must recycle the oxaloacetate to keep it going)
-CO2 (decarboxylation)
-oxidinal. removed from molecules reduce NAD+ and FAD and H’s transported to ETC in form of NADH and FAFH2
