Kinetic Theory Flashcards
what is melting
the process of turning a solid into a liquid using heat
what is freezing
the process of turning a liquid into a solid
what is boiling
the transition from a liquid to a gas or vapour
what is evaporation
a type of vapourization that changes from liquid to gas on the surface
what is condensation
the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water
what is sublimination
the process by which solid is converted to gas directly
what is the process of melting
if energy is supplied by heating a solid, the heat energy causes stronger vibrations until the particles eventually have enough energy to break away from the solid arrangement to form a liquid
what is the process of freezing
if heat is removed form a liquid the particles will have less kinetic energy, this decrease in kinetic energy will cause the particles to slow down for energy for the forces of attraction to fix them back into the solid state
what is the process of boiling
If enough heat energy is supplied to a liquid, the particles eventually move fast enough to break all the attractions between them, and the liquid boils
What is diffusion
The process by which particles move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until evenly spread out
what is Osmosis
the movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until evenly distributed
