science Flashcards
What are the types of energy?
LE KE CPE GPE EPE EE HE SE
How do we feel hot and cold?
produced by thermoreceptors, which are nerve cells found in the skin that can detect differences in temperature.
How does insulation work?
by slowing conductive heat flow and convective heat flow
How does heat travel by conduction, convection and radiation?
In CONVECTION, heat energy is carried by the movement of particles of matter. In CONDUCTION, heat is transferred by particles vibrating. In RADIATION, heat is carried directly by electromagnetic waves.
How do our lenses allow us to see?
The lens works together with the cornea to focus light correctly on the retina.
how is light received in the eye and sent to the brain?
The light is turned into electrical signals and sent to the brain.
what is energy?
it is the ability to do work
what is the job of the iris?
coloured tissue that changes size to open and close the pupil
What is the job of the conjunctiva?
Thin protective layer over the surface of the eye
What is the job of the pupil?
Hole or opening, through where the light enters the eye
What is the job of the lens?
Focuses light from different distances - can change its size
what is the job of the retina?
Nerve cells that collect light and send to the optic nerve
what is the job of the eyelid?
Cover of eye to block out light and help keep moist
what is the job of the cornea?
Main lens, used to focus light entering the eye onto the retina
what is the job of the optic nerve?
large nerves that send all images to the brain to be processed
what is the job of the eyelash?
protects the eye from dust, dirt or sand
