“ he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows.” chapter 3

A

after a failed attempt to repress hyde, jekyll finally transforms again which results in the murder of Sir Danvers. “trampling” relates back to the trample girls, showing again how violent hyde is, and this along with “hailing” emphasises the brutality and viciousness of the attack, increasing dramatic tension.

Q

“we may at least save his credit” chapter 8

A

utterson is extremely loyal, and isn’t sure whether to publicly share the contents of the letter or save jekylls reputation. This idea of reputation being so important is reinforced as we never actually know if Utterson exposes the truth or represses what the letters state.

Q

“i was the first. I was the first that could thus plod in the public eye… and in a moment… spring headlong into the sea of liberty.” chapter 10

A

Jekyll gives up on trying to protect reputation of any kind as Hyde, he enjoys the freedom from repression Hyde provides for him. “plod” (unexciting) contrasts with “spring” (energetic) to show what life is like for him without the worry of the “public eye”. He is eager to embrace his evil side.

Q

“my devil has been long caged; he came out roaring” chapter 10

A

Metaphor - just as demons have evil connotations, jekyll does now too, believing he has to repress his evil and express it through someone else. Also shows how repression can lead to worse things, as hyde is roaring after his true tendencies being covered up;he is growing more and more desperate to be free.

Q

“Many a man would have even blazoned such irregularities as I was guilty of; but from the high views that I had set before me, I regarded and hid them with an almost morbid sense of shame.” chapter 10

A

Shows how much reputation influences him; it is implied that whilst what he has done is not criminal, he is still concerned with how other people would feel as he has held himself and his actions to such a high standard for such a long time, repressing how he truly wishes to act. He feels it would be humiliating to be open about who he is.
