why did the rhineland palentines come
the goverment passed the foreign protestant naturalisation act this allowed all european protestants to live in England for one shilling
they were poor farmers suffering from a bad harvest
how were the rhineland palentines treated
to begin with they were recieved kindly and money was raised top help them. but people were concerned that immigrants would take their jobs. they drained resources and the goverment tried to send them to ireland
what impact did the rhineland palentines have
Britain no longer had an ‘open door’ policy for European migrants Britain only wanted migrants that were economically useful
why did the walloons and hugenots come
hugenots were religous refugees that came from France and Spain from 1570 onwards
walloons were protestants that came from belgium in 1560
how were the walloons and huegenots treated
they were welcomed by the english goverment
but there were anti-foriegner riots by poorer people
towns in kent invited walloons to set up buisnesses and their own church
money was raised and food kitchens were set up
what was the wallons and huegenots impact
they brought new trades such as feather- work and the making of fans
they increased production so rapidly that England became a Net exporter
2000 mainly walloon migrants went to canterbury to help wool and silk trade
Africans in Tudor England
in the sixtheenth century trade and exploration brought England into even closer contact with the wider world Africans came from western europe North and West Africa and the ottoman empire
why did many Africans come to england in the seventeenth and eighteenth century
some were born in England
others may have been originally enslaved such as ignatius sancho who was born on a slave ship in 1729
in the late seventeenth century it was a status of fashion for rich families to have a black child as a servant
why did indian children come to England in the seventeenth and eighteenth period
British men who emigrated to India to work for the east India company as administrators officers and soldiers married Indian women some who came to England to live
British families returning form India also brought Indian servants often children
evidence that black people did not have the same freedom as the wider population

these lascars came to Britain

in 1893 there was a serious battle in barrow between white sailors and muslims after the lascars had celebrated a religous festival in the streets
attempted removal of lascars
the national union campaigned for foreign seamen to stop being employed
the 1894 the merchant shipping act required ship owners to remove lascars
where did lascars settle
they settled thoughout the country- yemenis worked on the manchester ship canal
indians worked gardening, photography and catering.
