Weapons Effect
Being in the presence of a weapon increases aggression.
Gun violence
Myth that the majority of gun violence is committed by mentally ill people.
Media violence
Lab studies show a correlation in kids that watch more violence engage in more violent behavior but can’t conclude media causes this bc there are other variables or factors that could explain this (ie. growing up in a violent household or environment where violence is normalized)
Baiting crowd
Crowd that forms at the base of a building when someone threatens to jump. With larger crowd forms, they encourage the person to jump.
Deindividuation
The phenomenon of one losing a sense of his/her identity when they are a member of a large group. This often produces unrestrained violent behavior with no regard for social norms.
Aggressive Anxiety
Guilt or anxiety people experience when they feel they might act in an aggressive way. It’s a type of learned inhibition. Studies show that women feel this more than men. Parents who use more physical discipline feel this more and can teach this to their children, who are more likely to have it.
Learned Inhibitions
People tend to learn to inhibit aggressive behavior across development, and understand when it’s inappropriate to behave aggressively.
Counter aggression
People who are attacked tend to retaliate, even if retaliation is certain to cause more attacks. Fear of punishment or retaliation could initate counter aggression. (ex. think of how some children who are punished physically may counter attack with physical violence, such as swinging fists)
Albert Bandura Bobo doll Experiment
Kids learned aggressive behavior from adults interacting with Bobo dolls and built upon it.
Imitation
Kids have a tendency to imitate and model after others such as the Albert Bobo doll Experiment.
Contagious Violence
Refers to the phenomenon of copycat violence; violence inspired by other acts of violence.
Reinforcement
How/when we learn to be aggressive and when not to be aggressive through rewards or punishments.
Sources of Anger
Attacked/bothered - when people feel attacked they often feel anger.
Frustration - when you experience something that interferes with a goal or objective, people often feel anger.
Aggression
Intentional hurting. There is a distinction between aggressive feelings and aggressive behaviors.
