if its 4(top) and 4(bottom), that 4 at the bottom are crochet beats

idk rlly know the reason for that but ya u know now

Literally just how many notes (making the value needed at the bottom) there should be in a bar e.g.
4(top), 4(bottom), since the bottom is crochets, there has to be 4 crochets (and you should obviously know the value of a crochet is 1 beat so ya)

The 4 turns into an 8 = it is a quaver
