Q

Rank the following in descending order of ability to cause ionization: alfa particle, beta particle, gamma particle, neutrino

A
  1. (Highest). Alfa (lots of charge, grab electrons, don’t penetrate long but ionizes a lot)
  2. Beta (has to collide to knock out electron)
  3. Gamma (has to have direct collision)
  4. Netrino (none!)

6
Q

What happens to Alfa beta gamma in magnetic field?

A

Gamma = NOTHING! Has no charge
Alfa = bends, larger radius than beta since much larger mass, opp direction beta
Beta = bends, a lot more/smaller radius than Alfa and opp direction

Q

What is Binding Energy?

A

BE is the energy required to SEPARATE A NUCLEUS INTO ITS PARTS
or the energy released when a nucleus is assembled from its constituent parts.

Q

Baryon number:

A

Quark = +1/3
So if have a baryon it is +1

17
Q

Strangeness

A

All quarks have zero EXCEPT the strange quark which has -1 strangeness

18
Q

Lepton number

A

All leptons have 1; anti leptons have -1

19
Q

MOT IN FB

A

Anti quarks have OPPOSOTE SIGN FOR BARYON NUMBER
Anti-strange quark has S=+1
Anti quarks have opposite charge etc

20
Q

What properties should be conserved?

A

Charge
Baryon number
Lepton number
Strangeness (not nec)
