What is the atlas bone?
Most superior (uppermost) bone of the the vertebral column
-supports the skull
-allow forwards/backward movement
What is the axis bone?
Second most superior bone of vertebral column
-supports skull, allows for forward/backward movement
What is cervical vertebrae?
7 vertebral bones in neck
-includes atlas & axis
-has slight curve which forms after birth when infant holds up head
What is coccyx?
Tail bone
-formed from the fusion of four vertebral bones into a single bone
-triangle shaped, found below sacrum
What are false ribs?
5 pairs of ribs that lie below the true ribs
-connect to the vertebrae
-posterior (behind)
What are floating ribs?
Two pairs of false ribs are located lowest in the ribcage
(all ribs connect to the vertebrae)
What is hyboid?
U-shaped bone located in the front of neck
-not connected to any nearby bones
-assist with tongue movements & swallowing
-known as the tongue bone
What are intervertebral discs?
structures made of cartilage that act to support & cushion vertebrae
-enable movement between vertebrae
What is lumbar vertebrae?
5 vertebral bones located in the lower back of the spine
What is thoracic vertebrae?
12 vertebral bones located in the thoracic cavity
-contains a slight curve present at birth
What is vertebrae?
Bones that make up the vertebral column (spine)

Anatomical term for the spine/backbone
-extends from the skull to the pelvis
What is the sacrum?
Shield-shaped bone located in the pelvic region of the vertebral column
-hip bone connects here
-formed from the fusion of the 5 vertebral bones

The main weight-bearing portion of vertebrae
-anterior part of vertebrae (in front of)
-becomes larger from the cervical to the lumbar region
What is vertebral foramen?
hole in the bone through which the spinal cord travels
