Lecture 4b - How do molecules of life differ from non-living matter - polynucleotides Flashcards
1
Q
A
2
Q
How are poly nucleotides formed?
A
- the joining together of nucleotides (triphosphate)
- OH group on a 3’ carbon and a phosphate group on the 5’ carbon
- in a condensation reaction forming a phosphodiester bond\
- Triphosphates loose 2 of the phosphates so only one is included in the backbone
3
Q
What are the properties of RNA?
A
- made of ribose
- OH on C2
- single stranded
4
Q
What are the properties of DNA?
A
- made from deoxyribose
- no OH on 2’ carbon
- double stranded
5
Q
what direction do you go when reading DNA or RNA sequences?
A
5’ to 3’
6
Q
How many hydrogen bonds are between adenine and thymine?
A
2
7
Q
How many hydrogen bonds are between cytosine and guanine?
A
3
8
Q
what is semi-conservative replication?
A
- separate two strands and re synthesis the missing strand
9
Q
What is the function of nucleic acids?
A
- DNA helix must be strong to protect long term information storage
- RNA has many different structures
