What are the 2 main categories of the nervous system and what do they comprise of?

A
  1. The Central Nervous System (CNS) comprising the brain and the
    spine.
  2. The Peripheral Nervous System, which comprises the other
    nervous systems – the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is one
    of these.

How are the functions of the Autonomic system and what do they control?

A

The functions of the ANS are automatic and not under the
individual’s voluntary control. It controls the blood supply,
excretion, digestion, etc.

What are the 2 subsytems of the ANS.

A

The ANS has two sub-systems:

  1. The Sympathetic Nervous System, which largely energises us and
    prepares us for action.
  2. The Parasympathetic System, which slows us down and returns
    our bodies to a more relaxed state.
    You have already looked at Fig 6.1 in the textbook that summarises
    this structure.

What does the Endocrine system do and what chemicals does it use and what does it comprise of?

A

It is a system that sends messages around the body
using chemicals called hormones.

This system comprises a number
of glands each producing its own hormone.
