Q

What does it mean when something (e.g. a red blood cell) is hypotonic?

A

It means that the cell has higher concentration than the solution outside so the water outside will go through the partially permeable membrane through osmosis. Somtimes the cell will grow too much and explode this is called lysis.

Q

What does it mean when something (e.g. a red blood cell) is hypertonic?

A

It means the cell has a more dilute concentration than the outide substance making it travel out through the partially permeable membrane throug osmosis. This means the cell will shrink and shrivel this is called crenation.

Q

What does it mean when something (e.g. red blood cell) is isotomic?

A

It means the concentrations of the cell and the outside are the same so the cell stays the same.

Q

What does it mean when a plant cell is plasmolysed?

A

A plant can become plasmolysed if water is drawn out the vacuole by osmosis causing the cytoplasm to detach from the cell wall and collapse.

Q

What dies it mean when a plant cell becomes turgid?

A

An animal cell can become TURGID.
This is when watergoes into the cell
through osmosis and into the vacuole
making the vacuole and cytoplasm
expand.
