Operator must wait for the elevator to come to the ground floor before independent control can be activated.

Independent control is usually activated by a key or switch in a locked cabinet inside the
car. While the elevator is in this mode, it only responds to calls initiated inside the car.

Although this feature may be automatically initiated when a fire alarm is activated, it can also be activated manually by an emergency recall key switch. When emergency recall is activated, all elevators in that shaft return to the lobby and all of their doors open.

Emergency service (Phase II) feature

With this feature, the elevator only responds to calls initiated within the car. The difference between emergency service and independent control is in how the elevator car door is opened. To open the door of an elevator in emergency service, you must press and hold the Open button until the door is fully open. If while the door is opening you discover it is unsafe to proceed, you can release the Open button and the door will immediately close.

Before entering the elevator, always visually check the elevator shaft

1. Use a flashlight to visually check the elevator shaft between the door and the car.
2. If there is smoke, flame, debris or water; do not use any elevator in that shaft. OR If there is no smoke, flame, debris or water; continue with the next safety check.
