8 steps of placing urinary catheter

A
  1. Get supplies ready and place cat under anesthesia
  2. Clip hair and aseptically prep area
  3. Extrude penis
  4. Slowly advance lubricated catheter into urethra
  5. Irrigate/Lubricate urethra as needed to advance catheter
  6. Advance catheter into bladder
  7. Flush bladder once catheter is in place
  8. Suture/fix catheter into place and connect to urine collection system

– E-Collar
– Medication (Buprenorphine- pain; Prazosin- urethral spasm control; Antibiotics should be avoided if no infection is present)
