Q

Define an ore and give an example.

2 marks

A

Ores are naturally occurring rocks that contain metals or metal compounds in sufficient amounts to make it worthwhile extracting them.
An example is haematite, which is an iron ore.

Q

How are metals extracted from their ores?

3 marks

A

If the metal is above carbon in the reactivity series, it must be extracted by electrolysis.
Metals less reactive than carbon can be extracted by reduction using coke.
Silver, gold and platinum can occur pure in the ground and do not need to be extracted.

Q

What is a displacement reaction? Write an example word equation.

4 marks

A

Displacement is when one element is replaced by another element in a compound, when a more reactive element replaces a less reactive element.

Magnesium + Copper sulfate ====> Magnesium sulfate + copper
(Magnesium is more reactive than copper)
