C10 Flashcards
What’s a functional group?
A group of atoms with an organic compound that gives that compound its unique chemical and physical properties
Whats the double bond an example of?
A functional group
What do functional groups determine?
The reactions that undergo as well as the reactivity
Whats a homologous series?
A group of organic compounds that have the same functional group
If theyre in the same homologous series what do they have?
- Similar chemical properties
- Trends in physical properties
Whats a general formula?
An algebraic representation of the molecular formula of the compounds in that series
Whats the general formula for Alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What do alkanes normally have?
Double bonds
What’s a hydrocarbon?
Something that contains hydrogen and carbon atoms
What are alkanes?
Saturated hydrocarbons and contain single covalent bonds
Whats an alkene?
Unsaturated hydrocarbon which contains carbon-carbon double bond and has the formula CnH2n
When we combust alkanes what happens?
They produce carbon dioxide and water
What happens when you combust alkenes?
Produce unburnt carbon particles because of incomplete combustion
Whats the reaction with hydrogen called?
Hydrogenation
What does a nickel catalyst do?
Speed up the reaction
