Digestion Flashcards
3 main groups of nutrients
Carbohydrates(glucose, starch etc) , protein and fats
Name one physical and chemical breakdown
Teeth chewing food(physical) and saliva in mouth (chemical)
What nutrients does saliva break down?
Carbohydrates due to salivary amylase
3 main roles of the stomach
1.contracts muscular walls to push food around and mix it
2.produces pepsin(enzyme that breaks down protein)
3.produces hydrochloric acid (kills bacteria and provides good environment for pepsin)
What is the role of the pancreas?
Release digestive juices to ease digestion
Role of gall bladder?
Store bile, release bile
What is bile role?
1.Neutralise acid from stomach(bile is an alkaline)
2. Break down fat to give fat bigger surface area
Where is bile made?
Liver
How is small intestine adapted to its function?
1.The villi in the small intestine increasing surface area making it easier to get nutrients into the bloodstream quick
2.villi have single layer of surface cells making diffusion happen over a short distance
3.very good blood supply to maintain concentration gradient
What does large intestine do?
Absorb water from food
Order of food digestion
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and then rectum
