what was the aim of Howells?

A

what was the sample of the study?

A

all male, 418 in total all offenders in prison. mean age was 28.8 years. 65% were Australian/new zealand, 19% European/asian/other. 59% were married and 11% were divorced, separated/ widowed. 73% had never done AM and 20% had completed one 4% completed more than one, 3% had started but not completed one.

what was the procedure?

A

there was a control group that did not get treatment they were put onto a ‘waiting list’. the people who did do the AM had 10 2 hour sessions that focussed on provocations, relaxation, cognitive restructuring, assertion, relapse prevention. after they had the AM there were follow ups for PPTs at 2 and 6 months to see how they were doing.

what were the results?

A

the experimental group had significantly more improvement of anger knowledge than the control. although there were improvements in experimental group none were statistically significant, PPTs were seen to still be improving on the 2 month checkup, but this was not the same for the 6 month checkup

what were the conclusions?

A

the overall impact of the PPTs insignificant and the affects of AM did not last but people who were motivated or who had the most problems in AM were the most likely to make a positive change.
