Approach to D+ workshop Flashcards
What does the faeces of a dog with EPI look like
greasy
yellow
lots of it
this is due to maldigestion
what is EPI
exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
what controls peristalsis of the SI
autonomic NS
Why is it challenging to assess motility on radiographs
need to know history from the owner
because radiograph is just a snap shot of the animal
define tenesmus
the feeling that you need to pass stools, even though your bowels are already empty
what is melaena
digested blood- bleeding above mid SI- not just a sign of GI haemorrhage could be due to epistaxis
what is haematochezia
fresh blood in poo
describe the difference in weight loss between small and large intestinal diarrhoea
SI= weight loss common
LI= weight loss rare
if you see fresh blood in faeces what is it more likely to be SI or LI problem
LI
SI- will see melaena
if you see mucus in poo what is it more likely to be SI or LI problem
LI
if there is increased volume of faeces is it more likley to be SI or LI problem
SI
LI- normal or decreased volume
List the 4 catergories of D+
osmotic
secretory
inflammatory
motility disorder
what is osmotic D+ due to
maldigestion or malabsorbtion
what is secretory D+ due to
toxin or infection related
why is pyrexia important with GI disease
very unusual- tells you something systemic is going on
