Lesson 6: Multi-Trait Inheritance Flashcards

1
Q

discontinuous variation and examples

A

one characteristic doesn’t interact with any other- ex: pea colour does not interact or affect if it was wrinkled
- when there is one specific trait/option for instance, blood types are only A, B, O, and AB, there is no in between

Q

continuous variation and examples

A

trait may be affected by genes around it that may have an effect on the gene- ex: skin, hair, eye colour, height..
- affected by genes around it and has more possibilities of traits and options for instance, different shades of skin colour (white shades can be different)

Q

dihybrid cross is when..

A

when you look at how individuals inherited two pair of alleles
- can still look at inheritance patterns of the P, F1, F2 generations in the same way we did in monohybrid crosses

6
Q

we use what method to see potential gametes in multi trait inheritance?

A

FOIL method
ex: AaBb would foil into AB, Ab, aB, and ab

Q

mendels law of independent assortment concluded that..

A

each allele is inherited independent of each other as long as they are on different chromosomes
- inheriting one allele has no impact on the inheritance of another
- means that parents are just as likely to produce any of the four gametes

Q

how do you calculate probability? how do you do this?

A

use the product law to determine probability
- multiply the two probabilities
EXAMPLE: 3/4 x 1/4 - 3/16 = 75% X 25% = 18.75%
- simpler understanding: 3/16 is 3 divided by 16 which gives you 18.75%
