What is Diegetic / Non-Diegetic Sound?
Diegetic - exists within the film, characters can hear and react to it
Non Diegetic - exists outside the film world, characters cannot hear it
Examples of Diegetic Sound?
Dialogue, Music within a Scene
Examples of Non - Diegetic
Soundtrack, narration, external sound elements
What is Parallel sound?
When the music matches the action on screen
What is contrapuntal sound?
When the music goes against the visuals (e.g. the ear scene - reservoir dogs)
What is ambient sound?
The background sounds which are present in a scene or location (e.g. rain, cars, general chat)
What is Foley?
The act of recreating sounds that could not be captured during initial filming
What is ADR?
Additional Dialogue Replacement - when an actor re-records lines that weren’t initially clear enough
What is a “Score”?
An original piece of mostly instrumental music that is composed specifically for a film
What is a “needle drop”?
When a piece of popular pre-existing music is used in a film (e.g. hip to be square in American Psycho)
What is a soundtrack?
A collection of pre-existing music that influences or exists within a film (sunflower - itsv)
What is a Leitmotif?
A short, repeating phrase in music (e.g. BTTF, ROTA, James Bond)
What are the three types of Leitmotif’s?
1 - Character (James Bond)
2 - Setting (Rivendell)
3 - Emotion (Married Life - Up)
