new immigrants were viewed with high amounts of suspicion while entering the usa, some of these immigrants did not integrate into the american society, communicating with other immigrants in their own respective languages, and wearing clothes that were native to their own traditions.

The Dillingham commission was published in 1911 and it separated “old” immigrants known as WASPs who were seen as the good immigrants and it concluded that “new” immigrants were not suited towards the all white american lifestyle.

However the influence of people such as Grant should not be overplayed- his book sold 17,000 copies yet the population of America was around 102,000,000 which indicates that not all Americans who were against immigrants were against them on the basis of racist prejudiced attitudes.

enneth roberts wrote a series of articles which aligned with the WASPS for example he states “immigration has to be restricted as it would create a hybrid race of mongrels like those in south east europe”
which clearly perpetuates the idea of WASP dominance and racial inferiority of those immigrants coming from the areas which America was looking to distance itself from.

This shows that racist beliefs were the most important factor for changing attitudes towards immigration.
