What is the original Hebrew Order of the OT Canon?
1.) The Pentateuch/Torah/Law is the first division
2.) Prophets - includes the former prophets and latter prophets.
3.) Writings
How do the Former Prophets and Latter prophets work together to interpret scripture?
The Former Prophets records the history of the covenants and the Latter Prophets look back and interpret this history.
The Latter Prophets because they are writing based on the material of the Former Prophets.
What is the purpose of the Pentateuch/Law?
The Law deals with the Covenant documents.
This gives us the life, death, and teachings of the covenant mediator (Moses).
What is the purpose of the Writings?
This has to do with the books of scripture that deal with how God’s people should live in all circumstances.
It divides the books into two categories where the first 6 are “In Israel” and the last are “In Exile.”
How can the Hebrew order of the OT canon be helpful for hermeneutics?
Understanding the context of each of the books both within the categories of Law, Prophets, and Writings, but also in their historical context.
Describe the relationship between the Law/Torah and the New Testament.
Where the Law records the life, death and teachings of the covenant mediator, Moses.
The gospels record the life, death and teachings of the Covenant mediator, Jesus.
(4 books of the Law = 4 Gospels)
Describe the relationship between the Prophets and the New Testament.
Covenant History:
The Prophets record the history of the covenant and how it works out in the life of God’s people.
Acts also records how the teachings of the covenant mediator played out in the life of God’s people.
- Acts does what both the Former and Latter Prophets do, records the history and then looks back on the prophetic events.
Describe the relationship between the Writings and the New Testament.
The Writings deal with how God’s people should live in all circumstances; In Israel, and in exile.
The epistles tell us how to live as covenant members.
