Why did the 2010 Haiti earthquake occur ?

A
  • Haiti is situated at the northern end of the Caribbean Plate on a conservative plate boundary with the North American plate. There was friction between the 2 plates and then tension was released in the forms of an earthquake
  • Earthquake was caused by a slip along an existing fault.

1) Earthquake had a shallow depth meaning seismic waves had to travel a smaller distance meaning the seismic waves were carrying more energy.

2) Struck most densely populated areas

3) Buildings pancaked

4) Haiti’s airport was damaged meaning in the long and short term it was difficult to get aid.

5) UN brought cholera and many residents died
