A

His role in the crushing of the Indian rebellion won him a place on the Viceroy’s Council at Calcutta.Subsequently became Governor pf Bombay .His experiences led to the appointment , in 1877, as High Commissioner and Governor of Cape Colony.

He deliberately provoked a war with the Zulus, whom he considered an obstacle.Despite the war ending with British victory, defeat of British forces at Islandwanna and high cost of war led to an official reprimand. Frere was hastily withdrawn from SA by Gladstone’s government

Evelyn Baring began his career as a colonial administrator.He was the ‘ typical ‘ Victorian colonial official: an energetic administrator who was inflexible and condescending towards the deemed inferior.
Appointed as Consul in Egypt in 1882

A

he was consul in Egypt so approved the Dufferin report of 1883 which established an Egyptian puppet parliament with no power and asserted the need for Broth supervision of reforms.This established a ‘ veiled protectorate ‘ whereby he ruled the rulers of Egypt.
